Dear readers, following is a bit of news and announcements to keep you informed. Exciting projects abound!

Introducing Little Pip!

I am thrilled to announce Little Pip in her debut book Where is Home, Little Pip? (illustrated by Jane Chapman, published by Margaret K. McElderry). The book will be released on September 23, 2008. On a cold Antarctic shore baby penguin, Little Pip, greets the world with a cheerful curiosity. Her home is a pebbly nest made cozy by Mama and Papa who sing her a special lullaby every night.

Our home is where the land is free
from hill or mountain, twig or tree,
in our pebbly nest by the stormy sea
where Mama and Papa and Pip make three.”

All is well until Little Pip chases an irrestible black feather too far from home. Oh no! Pip is lost. How will she find her way home? And where is home anyway? Come along with Little Pip as she learns that home really is where the heart is.

Poetry is in the air!

My new poetry book for children What’s the Weather Inside? (published by Margaret K. McElderry) is due to be released next spring on March 9th. I have the galleys and this is such a hilarious book. The art by Barry Blitt is funny and smart—and I really think kids are going to have a blast reading it. To quote a poem from the book:

I Dare Ya!

If you think poems are stupid,
and poetry’s a bore.
If every poem you’ve ever read
has almost made you snore.
And if you’re sure this books the same
as all you’ve read before…
I dare ya, yes, I dare ya, turn the page.

Mortimer is Back!

The adorable mouse Mortimer from Mortimer’s Christmas Manger is back and this time he has green thumb in my new book Mortimer’s First Garden (published by Margaret K. McElderry, illustrated by Dan Andreasen). Due for release on February 24, 2009, this is an adorable new book for children perfect for spring and Easter celebrations.

Winter is just over, the sky is gray, and the ground is brown. Little Mortimer Mouse munches on sunflower seeds and longs to see something green.

Upon overhearing the story of how springtime rain and sunshine nurture little seeds to grow into great big green plants, Mortimer is skeptical but decides to plant one of his seeds, just to see if such a miracle really can happen. Mortimer finds a perfect sport to plant the seed, and then...he waits.

And waits.

And waits.

Impatient, Mortimer thinks nothing is ever going to happen to the little seed. But then something does happen. Something wonderful. Something divine. Something green!

First introduced in the bestselling Mortimer's Christmas Manger, Mortimer Mouse returns with gusto in this inspirational offering that celebrates the miracle of springtime.

Babies, Beautiful Babies!

I’m pleased to announce my first self-illustrated (with photographs) book! Beautiful Babies is a touch and feel board book (published by Little Simon) illustrated with my own original photos of adorable, cuddly, baby animals.

It's springtime on the farm and all the baby animals are out for a day in the sun! From little chicks that like to peep to a tiny puppy oh-so-cute, these beautiful babies are sure to thrill even the smallest readers. Children will love to touch and feel the 7 textures in this adorable photographic board book. The final spread includes a mylar mirror.

Photographic board book includes 7 touch-and-feel elements embedded in the cover and interior pages, as well as a mylar mirror on the last spread. Pages have rounded corners. Safety tested for all ages.

Current Projects:

As always I have a slew of projects on the boilerplate. Cows that enjoy baked goods, more silly poems, a polar bear book…too many to list. Keep watching my newsletter for more exciting announcements, and as always thank you so much. A writer without readers is a sad writer. I am grateful for you all.
