Welcome to Good Karma

Welcome Friends! Here is a place for teachers, parents, librarians and writers to learn what's going on in the world of book author Karma Wilson.

I’m back!

April fools! No, just kidding. I really am back. I’m hoping to be able to think of incredibly witty and intriguing things to post here about writing, children’s books, and my life each and every day. But even if I can’t think of what to eat for breakfast I shall try to check in on a more regular basis.

Publisher’s Weekly has reviewed What’s the Weather Inside and pronounced it “Silversteinian in its format and sensibility“.

I. Am. Awed!  This is a surreal experience for me. I read Shel’s poetry when I was in grade school. I read Shel’s poetry to kids I babysat as a teenager. I read Shel’s poetry when I was studying up on how to be a children’s book author. I read Shel’s poetry to my kids when we went camping and had no distractions. To be compared to him…well…I can’t ask for more.

I’ve been away for a few weeks touring PA and OH on an author tour. It was wonderful but exhausting. I love connecting with the kids. It’s great fun to read my stories and share the writing process with creative little minds.

But I’m glad to be home because I am very tired! 🙂

Good to be back….

Xmas? It’s Greek to me!

First let me apologize for my long absence. I’m all out of excuses, so I’ll just say I’m sorry. 🙂

Now, on to my post….are you a Christian offended by the word “Xmas”? Do you feel it’s part of an evil effort to “x out christ”? Well, stop it! The origin of the word “xmas” is steeped in the Christian faith! And here’s the good news, it opens up a wonderful teaching opportunity about the history of the church. Skeptical? Read on…

First of all, the use of the word “xmas” isn’t some modern attempt to secularize Christmas. The word has been used for at least 1000 years, and probably much longer.

So what’s the X stand for? Christ! X was commonly used as an abbreviation for Christ in the 1500’s, the days of the early printing press. Words like Xian, Xianity, and Xmas were employed as a way to save time and ink. Typesetting was done by hand and a very tedious process.  Why X? It’s the Greek symbol for X (Chi) which is the first letter in Christo. Greek symbols representing important aspects of faith have a long tradition in the Christian faith.

Use of the word “X” for Christ has even been spotted in ancient Christian art.

This is from the Vatican. Greek letters X (Chi) and P (Ro)..symbolizing the first two letters in the word Christos…meaning Christ.

Pretty cool, huh?

So do not fear the word Xmas. When you see it, smile…and remember X=Christ.

Beautiful Babies

Here is a sneak peak of my illustration debut! The pictures in this new touch and feel book for babies and toddlers were all taken by me. Trust me, baby animals are divas! Super models have nothing on them.

This book is coming out in Janurary. I had so much fun working on this!

MSRC Speeches

My presentation for the MSRC went great! I didn’t use the computer at all. I just tried to be myself. People are being really nice and saying I entertained them.  I’m just glad I managed to stay upright and remember who I was! Thanks for all the great suggestions. You’re all awesome!
