I browsed some customer reviews at Amazon and people are universally calling Pip a he. But Pip is actually a girl. Funny enough, she started as a he when I first thought of her, but I decided that I needed a good female character since all the bear characters are boys.

I guess she needs a bow in her hair. Reminds me of when my daughter was a baby with little-old-man hair. She would be decked out in pink with roses and people would say, “What a cute little boy!” ha ha ha!

Hope everybody is having a terrific fall. It is GORGEOUS here. The aspen are at peak color.

I am so behind on email. If you have written me please be patient. Life is in my way!

If you missed my latest newsletter you may not realize that artist Jane Chapman (who illustrated the Bear books) and I are teaming up for a new series. I would like to introduce you to the new, adorable character, Little Pip the penguin, who will make her debut appearance in the book Where Is Home, Little Pip? (Margaret K. McElderry Books, Sept. 08)

First of all, I want to clarify that Little Pip is a baby Adélie penguin, not an Emperor as I erroneously suggested previously on this blog. Duh! I knew this, and I can’t explain my complete brain cell failure. I’m actually pleased, because these days the Emperors are getting all the press. Here’s the intro paragraph from the book and some sneak peak art.

Pip was hatched in a nest made of pebbles on the cold Antarctic shore. She was as fluffy as new-fallen snow and small even for a baby penguin.

I hope you enjoy this new series. I adore Pip. She’s a plucky and precious little penguin! Stay tuned–in two days I’m posting a sneak peak of the next in the Bear series (Bear Feels Scared) and it’s some of the best bear art yet! Totally new and amazing. Jane Chapman has outdone herself yet again!

Did you know I have written a Valentine’s Day book called Bear Hugs? It’s now available in paperback. I should have posted about it earlier but I forgot (there is a poem about a forgetful elephant in the book). It’s actually a collection of goofy “Love Poems” about various animals.

Funny aside: The original title was supposed to be Rhinocerkiss (a poem of that name appears in the book), but the sales force determined it wasn’t “cuddly” enough. I liked it. But the sales team won. What do you think? Here’s the Rhinocerkiss poem.

Rhinocerkiss

Rhino Mister and Rhino Miss
gaze at the moon in rhino bliss.
They rub their rhino tusks like this.
And now you’ve seen
rhinocerkiss!
